The LRS (Long Range Surveillance) Monocular by N-Vision Optics is the perfect solution for professional film makers and serious hobbyists looking to adapt their DSLR or production cameras to Generation 3 night vision technology.  Currently in use by U.S. SOF units and Hollywood film crews, the LRS is as good as it gets for nighttime filming and photography.  It offers unparalleled options and feature for the end user.  In fact, the LRS was used on all cameras filming the climactic raid scene at the end of the Hollywood blockbuster, Zero Dark Thirty.

The LRS is available in three different models: the LRS Scout, LRS Ranger, and the LRS Recon.  Each system utilizes a high performance Generation 3 Gated, PINNACLE tube, but the three models differ in the rated performance of their tube’s technical specifications.  The LRS Scout utilizes an excellent Pinnacle tube which has a tested resolution of at least 64 lp/mm and 21 SNR.  The Ranger comes with a hand-select tube that will generally have performance above 25 SNR.  The LRS Recon has the highest spec tube; practically spotless with resolution reaching as high as 72 lp/mm in some cases.

The housing is constructed of durable, lightweight, hard coated aluminum and attaches directly to the camera body with the appropriate adapter (sold separately) for a wide variety of Nikon, Canon, and video production cameras.

The included 50mm objective lens assembly takes impressive photo and video with a shallow depth of field, creating a very cinematic feel.  Any 1″ C-Mount lens, or other lens coupled to a C-Mount adapter (sold separately), can replace the standard LRS objective lens assembly.  This perfect matching of the night vision system to the camera body results in a crisp, superior image with advantages over systems which instead, attach the monocular to the front of the camera lens.  On most full-frame 35mm cameras, this means the LRS night vision image will fill the whole frame, eliminating the tunnel vision or “vignetting” effect experienced with other systems.  As with most standard lenses, an aperture ring allows for fine tuning light exposure and a focus ring provides manual adjustment for optimum image sharpness.

Very few night vision systems are designed specifically for photography and video production.  Even fewer offer the ability to also be used as a stand-alone monocular without a camera attached.  The LRS accomplishes all of this.  Compare the uncompromising quality and price of the LRS with its competitors and you’ll see why it’s the perfect choice for professional television crews, film, news, and serious amateur videographers.

All LRS units are available with a variable gain control knob that allows the user to make additional adjustments to the amount of amplified light utilized by the scope. It works in conjunction with the aperture settings of the objective lens of the scope. If used with the Canon or Nikon DSLR photo adapter set-up, most cameras will allow additional shutter and ISO adjustments in the camera’s manual setting mode. The variable gain function can be very useful in situations where a brighter light source within the frame is causing your video picture to dim down. The LRS models without variable gain will compensate for lighting changes by adjusting the gain automatically. However, the more advanced user may find occasions when they want to lighten certain dark areas of the video or photo by increasing the gain manually.
