The AN/PVs-24 Clip-On Night Vision Device (M2124) Night Vision is part of the USSOCOM SOPMOD system for M4 Carbine. It is designated as a lightweight, short-range clip on sight optimized for the 4x optics included in the SOPMOD program (Trijicon ACOG and Elcan Specter DR).
The AN/PVS-24 provides the operator a day/night optical capability. Eliminating the need for two separate optic systems for day/night operations, the AN/PVS-24 simply clips onto the standard 1913 Picatinny Rail in front of the day optic, providing night vision capability with minimal-to-no POA/POI shift. This benefits the user by reducing the weight of gear carried into the field and maintaining a constant eye relief on the same optic. The AN/PVS-24 utilizes an L3 Gen3 Auto-Gated tube, providing a bright, crisp image.
Clip-On Night Vision Devices are very popular among Special Operations Forces because of their increased versatility over a dedicated night vision scope that needs to be re-zeroed every time it is reattached to a platform. The AN/PVS-24 has a specific tasking in that it is designed for low-power optics. Because the system does not have to produce high resolution images at long distances under increased magnification, it can be made smaller and lighter. Its 55mm objective lens is significantly smaller than the intermediate-range AN/PVS-22, making the unit lighter by several ounces. The smaller profile is optimized for the M4 Carbine’s short carbine-length gas system and hand-guards.
The AN/PVS-24 is a robust unit that utilizes L3’s top-of-the-line Gen3 Auto-Gated Image Intensifier Tube. It performs very well when used within its operational parameters. As such, it should be used with an M4/ M4A1/ AR-15 system, chambered in 5.56x45mm. Its optimal magnification range is between 4-6x, depending on the available ambient light. The best-case usage is with a 4x day scope.
While the AN/PVS-24 is not intended as a sniper-capable clip-on sight, it is a wonderful addition to a designated marksman’s kit. Operating the unit is simple. It runs off a single CR123 battery and has simple, intuitive controls. The On/Off switch is easily accessed by the shooter without taking his primary hand off fire control, while focus is achieved by actuating an innovative lever on top of the system. The lever focus is a really nice touch because of its gross-motion capable movement. The user really gets the feeling he/she is affecting the unit. It also works incredibly well for fine focus because it can be manipulated with slight finger pressure. Care must be given to not accidentally affect the focus during rigorous movement, though.
